Family Struck, Daughter Killed Crossing Street

Recently a young child was killed and the mother is still in critical condition in Tampa after being injured while crossing the street in Lakeland, Florida. This is an unfortunate situation which will affect all the involved parties, both the driver and the pedestrian(s).
Crossing a street with children is a dangerous task because children can be erratic and cars are dangerous. When crossing the street with children you should be absolutely sure you have enough time for even the youngest and smallest child in your group to cross the street safely. With multiple children it can be helpful to have an older child assist a younger one, again understanding that time is probably the most important thing to remember.
If no cars are coming, then you might have all the time in the world to cross safely. If cars are coming then the safety of the children needs to be the primary concern. Crossing a busy street alone is hard enough, with children the complexity is multiplied.
