About twice a month I speak to a potential client who has been injured in a motor vehicle crash where the other driver, the one that caused the crash to begin with, has absolutely no insurance at all. Uninsured motorists are everywhere and are the cause of more than their fair share of accidents. This is logical to some extent. After all, they are not supposed to be driving without insurance yet they are, so why would you expect them to be good drivers? The even more sad part is when the potential client tells me they have "full coverage". This is when I have to be the bearer of bad news. "Full coverage" in Florida simply means you have property damage coverage and personal injury protection (PIP) coverage. No more, no less. This is all the law requires. Unfortunately, as we have said many times before, this leaves the potential client with almost no recourse. But more people are now buying uninsured motorist coverage, which provides for when you are hit by that other driver who has no coverage at all or only a small amount of coverage. Lilly, O'Toole & Brown urges everyone to get uninsured motorist coverage to protect themselves in the event of a motor vehicle crash. You could not depend on that other driver to not hit you, why would you think you can depend on that other driver to have insurance coverage to protect you?
