Traffic Deaths Down, But Stay Alert
A recent story in the Ledger documented a decrease in the number of traffic deaths in the past year and indicated this was due to increases in the price of gasoline.It is hoped that the bigger reason is people being more aware of what they are doing and less inclined to talk on the phone, eat, text or do any number of other things that prevent a driver from giving their full attention to the road. The old saw still rings true: give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to be, pay attention and keep your cool.
Getting there is the idea, not getting stopped because of an avoidable incident. Giving yourself that extra time is difficult because every thing always seems so rushed but you will be thankful you did when that driver in front of you realizes his text message just caused him to run a stop sign or while dropping his donut he looked down and hit the car in front of him. You took that extra couple of minutes and were able to avoid the problem and everything that comes afterwards. A few extra minutes now means no stopping at the repair shop to see how the car is doing or the extra hours at the emergency room.
