Whiplash Caused by a Car Accident in Florida

Whiplash injuries are among the most common injuries caused by car accidents.  This type of injury occurs when the neck is hyper-extended, which is often a result of being struck from behind, such as in a situation where you are rear-ended by another car.

When you are struck from behind, your body is pushed forward, but your head does not immediately follow.  As a result, muscles and ligaments can be stretched or torn.  Whiplash can be very painful and the time it takes to recover varies greatly.  Some people experience symptoms of whiplash for years.

Neck pain, neck stiffness, headache, dizziness, fatigue and arm weakness are all associated with whiplash.  Serious cases of whiplash can cause depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances, which only complicates the recovery.  The treatment of whiplash depends heavily on your symptoms.  A cervical collar is frequently used to help stabilize the neck.  Physicians also regularly prescribe ice and heat therapy, bed rest, neck rest, muscle relaxers and pain medication.  Your doctor may even recommend physical therapy to help with the recovery of your whiplash injury.

If you have received a whiplash injury, you may find yourself unable to return to work right away and as a result could suffer a financial loss.   Medical expenses tend to add up as you receive treatment for your injury.  You do not have to bear the financial burden alone if the whiplash injury was the result of someone else’s negligence.  If someone is to blame for your whiplash injury, you may be entitled to compensation.  Contact Lilly, O’Toole & Brown, LLP at (863) 683-1111 for advice regarding your case.
