The last two weeks of December brings holiday parties, family gatherings and various social events. It is a time of celebration, but it is also a dangerous time to be on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 4 out of 10 deaths were caused by drunk driving accidents in the last two weeks of December.
The new study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration examined crashes that occurred between 2002 and 2006. Researchers found that 21-24 year old drivers were involved in more fatal drunk driving accidents than any other age group. In Florida, there were 558 deaths caused by alcohol-related crashes in 2007.
“Drunk driving is one of the most serious, and preventable, dangers we face on our roadways. Sadly, the death toll from drunk-driving crashes is higher between Christmas and New Year’s than any other time,” said NHTSA Acting Administrator David Kelly.
The report that was recently released by the National Traffic Safety Administration came on the eve of a national crackdown against impaired driving. The national campaign involves thousands of law enforcement agencies throughout the United States and will run through the New Year’s holiday. This campaign, known as “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest,” is supported by a $7 million national television and radio advertising campaign.
If you plan to be on the road during the holiday season, there are ways that you can protect yourself from being involved in a drunk driving crash. Be sure to designate a driver before arriving at a social event and never get behind the wheel if you have been drinking. If you are the host or hostess of a party, have a plan in place if any of your guests drink too much. For example, you might want to have a spare room available where they can sleep or have a taxi service on call. Many drunk driving accidents occur in the early morning hours and the late evening. Avoid traveling during these times on Christmas and New Year’s. You should also wear your seatbelt at all times and make sure the other passengers do as well.
Drunk driving accidents often result in serious injuries. If you or a loved one has been injured in an alcohol-related accident caused by another driver, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.
