Do you know the early warning signs of a heart attack? All five of them? According to a new study from the Center for Disease Control’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, only one in four adults knew all five warning signs and also knew to call 9-1-1.
Heart Attack Warning Signs
The warning signs for a heart attack are:
· Pain or discomfort in your jaw, neck, or back;
· Feeling faint, lightheaded, or weak;
· Experiencing chest pain or discomfort;
· Experiencing shoulder or arm pain or discomfort;
· Shortness of breath.
Men are most likely to experience chest pain and discomfort. The average age for a first heart attack in men is 66 years of age.
Women are also most likely to experience chest pain and discomfort, but are more likely than men to experience the other symptoms – particularly shortness of breath, jaw pain, and back pain.
Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States. Nearly half a million Americans will die of a heart attack this year and another half million will suffer a non-fatal attack. In fact, nearly half of the heart attack deaths will occur before the victim even reaches the hospital.
But recognizing the signs of a heart attack early can greatly increase your chances of survival. During a heart attack, physicians can administer blood clot-busting drugs that can stop heart attacks, limit the damage to the heart, reduce disability, and save your life. However, these drugs work best during the first hour after the heart attack.
The National Heart Lung & Blood Institute recommends that you call 9-1-1 even if you’re not sure that what you’re experiencing is a heart attack. Heart attacks don’t always look the way they do in movies and they don’t always feel the way that we would expect them to. But hoping that the pain simply goes away can be deadly. If you’re not sure, you should still have it checked out. Waiting as few as five minutes for things to return to normal can cost you your life.
